Understanding the New Regulations for International Students in Canada

Canada’s International Student Program (ISP) is evolving. On November 15, 2024, new regulations took effect, introducing key changes that all current and prospective students should know.

WHAT’S CHANGING?

1. Stricter Work Hour Limits

International students with off-campus work authorization are now restricted to a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms (an increase from the previous limit of 20 hours per week). This ensures students prioritize their education while still having opportunities for financial support.

2. Approval Required for Institution Changes

Switching designated learning institutions (DLIs) now requires prior approval for a study permit amendment. This means that international students must apply and be approved for a NEW study permit before changing learning institutions The change aims to reduce confusion and ensure students meet eligibility requirements before making transitions.

3. Enhanced Compliance Reporting by DLIs

Designated learning institutions must verify the authenticity of acceptance letters (LOAs) and provide regular enrollment reports for international students. Non-compliance may result in a DLI being suspended from welcoming new international students for up to a year for failing to provide the required information.

WHY THESE CHANGES MATTER
